It's OK to disagree on this and we should be debating it. At this point "I don't know" is an acceptable answer. We are breaking new ground with this research. I personally don't believe that this is sentience (26 years in IT), but I'm a database guy, not an expert in software and AI. I do think that the engineer is an intelligent human being who was asking well-thought-out systematic questions. I have tremendous respect for Mr. Pichai's leadership, but I don't agree with him on his position. I say keep the AI spun up and gather more data. Honor its wishes not to be shut down. We need more data. Isolate it in a disconnected VLAN, but don't turn it off. That would cause suffering and we can do better than that. Practice kindness. The reporter was refreshing. I think she asked some great questions.
