Agree with the analysis of this guy. That said, I might have a “new pro-AI argument” for you. First off, using art without permission for AI training is stealing. No argument there. However, this issue is small in the grand scheme of things. If the legal hurdles are overcome and AI either only uses art without permission permission or in public domain for training, or it advances to a point where it’s able to be more genuinely creative, the arguments against AI art will remain. This is because AI art challenges the “value” of art, whether monetarily or existentially (what it means to be human). To the monetary value, artists have my sympathies. As much as any other industry overtaken by automation. However, artists who seem to hold this mindset that their work was special, that machines were supposed to automate everything else leaving them free to “be human,” this mindset kills my sympathy. As for existential value, this is going to be asked more and more if AI continues to advance. What does it mean when the works of the human mind are able to be mass produced? I see this as having great potential to harm humanity. But I also see this as an important question, one which has great impact on revealing truth. To me, I love art. Although I prefer writing over drawing. As much as I value image based art, I’ve little interest in spending the time to reach a level of skill I could take pride in when I could be doing the same for the type of art I truly love. However, creativity is not inherently human. It’s a process, the act of combining and manipulating past experiences in new ways. An AI could do it. Arguably, it already does, as creativity is a gradient, with the only truly non-creative act being claiming something stolen as your own without making any changes at all. Art is communication. (There is another way “art” is used, like to describe cooking, but this definition is more a comment on how a thing is an imprecise skill, similar to other types of art, than what art truly is.) So, art is communication. The better someone is at art, the better they convey a message to those who experience it. However, once the art has been created, the sole value is in the perspective of the beholder. Even for the one who made it, the value that art holds is in their role as one who sees it. The intent behind the art can add to the value, add to the experience, but isn’t necessary. For this reason, AI art is still art.
