I'm a teacher who uses AI to help generate materials. The key is that before using AI, the teacher needs to have a clear idea of the unit content and objectives (my school doesn't have scripted curriculum, and I write all my own unit and lesson plans). AI helps me work more effeciently. It can generate class assignments quickly and then modify them for student IEP's. In the past, I was not always able to modify assignments because I only have so much time in a day, but AI makes it possible for me to more easily differentiate.
To use AI well as a teacher, I need to be very specific in how I prompt the AI. The idea for the assignment has to be 100% mine, and I need to give pointed instruction for what skills the activity is developing, what content is involved, the specific work that needs to be completed, and how students should be assessed. The AI can generate this in a clear template.
Another way I have used AI is in helping my AP students prepare for their tests. I will feed the AI all the data collected from AP classroom, and the AI can break everything down to show both me and the students the skill and knowledge gaps they have, which allows me to better point the student towards practice that will be most beneficial to them, and the student also gets a definitive breakdown of their strengths and weaknesses.
I've seen some teachers use AI lazily, where they just feed it a prompt like, "make me a lesson on (blank)," and this results in boring lessons and teachers who don't know the ins and outs of what they are teaching. However, I think that AI can be a very positive teaching tool when used appropriately and not as an excuse for thinking.
