i live in an area of a city that has been getting avs, and its been honestly terrifying. i live in a mostly residential neighborhood that is only a few blocks away from multiple main roads, and the residential blocks tend to not have traffic lights, only stop signs and every time i see one of those avs (which has in the past couple of months increased rapidly) its fucking terrifying. i absolutely do not trust them to not run me over, and i barely trust human drivers not to. theres a crossing on the main road closest to me that literally doesnt have a crosswalk across it, and it is fucking terrifying but thankfully there is a light another block or two in both directions. it is so much scarier to think about how those lights would get removed because the driverless cars could just coordinate with each other, and this is as a disabled person who can only walk shorter distances and so absolutely requires having regular crosswalks so i dont end up having to waste what little walking ability i have to double back like 2 full blocks because theres no lights!!!! nightmareish!! and the few times im in a car in the area, its a nightmare to drive across too or turn off of! i see it happen to people and ive experienced it where theres just a car waiting for like half a minute for there to be enough of a break in the flow of cars to safely make the turn. horrifying video but a very good comparison to how cars ruined america. you mentioning the *edit: *tram system of los angeles that was decimated made me weep. we dont need more and easier ways to use these fucking things, i need closer, more abundant, and more widely accessible bus stops. i need more bus stops with a bench and coverings from the sun and easier routes to get places, and im in an area that is considered to have pretty decent public transit. i was making a choice of where to go, and have to usually pull up the bus routes to get there because its so disproportionate that there was a place that was 10 minutes driving and wouldve taken 45 minutes by bus. if i went in another direction for a similar distance it wouldve been less than 30. there was a civil location i had to go to where i could choose between where and one direction (that was a decent bit further in distance) actually had a direct bus route and so took me only about 45 minutes instead of like an hour and 45 minutes. fucking hell.
