It's crazy that it's taken this long for this stuff to percolate up to mainstream attention because this particular one has been coming for a very long time, this precise thing was the key point of Andrew Yang's failed presidential run in 2020. it's a foundational pillar of his argument for UBI. transportation makes up a huge percentage of the job market right now and was easily automatable back in 2020, it's only gotten more feasible since then. as a society we have got to start preparing for this change because it's gonna happen (arguably already is happening) whether we're collectively ready for it or not.
I'm pro labor, pro union, we need more unions, my own industry (game dev) is in dire need of unionization and has needed unionization desperately for decades at this point. all that said this tech is absolutely coming. we gotta prepare. the writers and actor's strikes are illustrative here because they too must navigate a technological change that is coming very quickly. the best thing about unions in this context isn't stopping this stuff wholesale, it's having someone on the labor side of the table during these changes so that we the people can see that our interests are also addressed in these situations. Unions are about keeping corporate power in check by making sure we're in the friggin room.
