Someone proposed that ai images are something like “Fountain” or appropriation art (using exist images). But I’m not convinced; both of those use the existing objects or images in the final piece. The fact that you can tell it’s using something that already exists but some new intentionality is added; that is what elevates it to art. AI images are not art because they have barely any intentionality, and they churn their materials until they are unrecognizable. It wants to be an original piece, but also be allowed to steal.
