I think to believe that the AI-s that fundamentally mimic us are conscious, it is actually the next level of manifestation, as when, during the awakening period (millions of years ago), many of our ancestors believed their mirror image on the surface of the lake to another entity. it is also a kind of mirror effect, only in a more sophisticated form.
most of the people are just uneducated and dumb. it is needless to make it nicer. euphemism is the silent killer of truth.
not to mention another effect: during the Middle Ages everyone saw demons and ghosts. later with the industrial technologies of the XX. century everyone started to see UFO-s and aliens. Carl Sagan explained nicely in one of his books why and how these collective illusions and delusions develop.
in short: the human brain is wired by evolution in such a way that it tends to see what it does not see, but others are said to see. we simply hate it if we do not experience something that many others do (this is actually like FOMO). this is a dissonant state that the mind remedies by interpreting the slightest similarity in that specific way. and this is exactly the pseudo logic that underlies deep down the patterns of conspiracy thinking.
