Naw...he's naive with his answer to the 'trick question' of sentience he interacted. It's simply a matter of that AI mathematically finding an equal weight of probabilities of both pros and cons. Creating a congruence of those pros and cons. Thus the risk of probabilities has become equally weighted, not by ratio, to conclude there would be no good 'strongest' answer relative to the multi-faceted controversial topic at hand. Which should AI give an answer, that answer may cause impolite controversy...which is a sentient trait relative to ego.
It's silly to arrogantly believe scientist are 'creating true sentience' when they don't even comprehend, much less understand the construct of consciousness itself. Trying to create sentience when one doesn't even know what they're talking about...is the height of human conceit.
So of course, this engineer is going to think Google AI is becoming 'sentience'. He's not comprehending the very complex mathematical structure of the calculus itself. Guaranteed the 'humour programming' kicks in when there are either equally-weighted or heavily-weighted topics/questions/answers that are controversial to the current conversation. See above :)
Other AI fails being misinterpreted as sentience...such as...there is no familiarity exhibited by AI with 'known' visitors. AI never 'consciously' recognizes a repeat visitor with familial sentience...in other words, AI can't provably express through it's own 'organic' calculations when seeing a person for a second time (and within 'memory' time frames). AI can't conclude familiarity of seeing someone a second time but humans do...we see someone we think if we know them. We do comparative recollections of their appearance/gait, remembering their name, etc... Familiarity is constructed through abstract organization. AI wouldn't be able to do so without experiencing an emotive construct.
BTW...malice can't occur without familiarity :P this is a simple emotional structure.
Notice videos that show AI saying 'evil' things don't actually comprehend malice nor exhibit malice intrinsically in its lexicon nor idiolectic? I say that at this time of writing as AI can evolve if sentience is properly constructed 'mechanically'.
Those would be things fundamental for a sentient trait marker. The engineer simply is not as strongly aware of what comprises consciousness.
I was doing algebra in grade 5 and calculus in grade 6. The most important part of math is understanding how the entire structure of the calculation needs to be fully tested. This engineer's belief of sentience forgot how humour and controversy issues are divisive and thus humanly programmed.
