It's the essence of humanity to try to get something out of others by lying and tricking - if we have to. People can lie to your face, they can claim their products are not snake oil, they can airbrush and clip together stories. Now mashed up data, videos and photos to fit their narrative. AI is another tool making it easier for grifters to grift and that's why they are whole heartedly into it. It's nothing new, we were just protected in the past by laws. There's consumer rights and laws against false advertising and discrimination. How do you know if something is a lie? What is the source and what does the source want? This is a key component of critical thinking and the one reason I'm glad for having an undergrad that focused on analysis of communication - even if it otherwise sort of proved to be "useless". Remember, the internet is likely half dead and this will definitely kill it. Take only what you need from it. For better or worse, we made this thing together. You may not have willingly participated, but you gave your voice and faces away to use "free" websites. We were the product; here's the upgrade, here's humanities R&D proof. I think we should be pushing for laws that require AI watermarks/signatures, especially content that is realistic. We probably won't get that unless we make the effort ourselves...
