It's so simple. Communication is exchanging information. Information is "state" - and hence needs a medium. So "disembodied souls"? I don't think so. Consciousness is the ability to reason with reflection i.e. being able to analyze and communicate _how_ this reasoning is taking place - and which steps were taken in the process. Of course, a conscious being is able to simulate that process - or not be truthful about it at all. It's hard to design a watertight test for that. Voight-Kampff, anybody?
I am pretty sure I'm conscious - just like Descartes was. I can however, never be sure if any human consciousness shares the same characteristics as mine. You could all be "philosophical zombies" as far as I'm concerned. Let alone an LLM. To paraphrase *"Pulp fiction":* _"We'd have to be talkin' about one darn smart AI before I believe that."_
A mental form of pareidolia is another explication - and a far more acceptable one. Add to that people with co-morbidities like neuroticism or depression, people inclined to believe in superstitions - and I think we got the picture complete.
