as a philosophical thinker I have arrived at many similar conclusions to Roger Penrose, and I generally like his way of thinking about the origins of consciousness. The difference between AI and living creatures is free will. I suppose if you could program free will into an AI then I would perhaps have to concede that we created a new conscious entity. I don't think AI really ever do something that is beyond what they were programmed to do. We might not understand how the AI works as well as other code, but its still limited and incapable of novel thoughts.
