The one thing that neither of them accounted for is the coming step-change in how much AI services cost. Until today, every single token was subsidised by bags of investor cash; today, Microsoft was the first to announce that Copilot will be switch to per-token billing, and it's gonna be _expensive_ . I expect all of the others to do the same, eventually, because each of the big players is currently going bankrupt trying to convince people that they're the one closest to AGI etc. I mean, look at Anthropic - Claude basically has a lie down every afternoon because they just can't afford to run it, and they're even A/B testing different pricing options (which is nuts).
This is the dirty secret - frontier AI models are _not_ a cheap alternative to people. In fact, they're at _least_ as expensive as people to get the same jobs done. When that economic reality hits, all the companies who've gone AI-first will have a very uncomfortable choice: either hire all the people back that they've fired in haste, or scale back/go bankrupt because they simply can't afford to provide previous service levels any more.
