The AI facial recognition in that 2023 Peppermill case was impressive for its time but far from today's standards. If the exact same photos and metadata (like height/weight/age differences) ran through a current top-tier algorithm with multimodal checks, it would almost certainly flag them as not the same person with 99%+ confidence. We're already very close to (or at) the point where such blind "100% match" mistakes become extremely rare; full near-certainty in edge cases like this could be standard in high-stakes security by 2028-2030 as tech keeps improving exponentially. None of that tech progress excuses the boneheaded decision by security and police to ignore every other piece of evidence staring them in the face.
