The thing that people miss, is that a UBI (or any basic income really) will only be worth it, when automation makes the majority of unskilled jobs extinct, and the current model of consumer society will start to fail, due to the unskilled workforce essentially becoming unemployed (or not earning enough to make a living). I think we still have about 30-50 or so years before that. At that point we'll need some sort of basic income (negative will also work but only for the first few decades), just to keep the economy going. But until then, good old capitalism is the way to go.
