They just fundamentally misunderstand what art is. They see "Art" as the final product, literally just a jpeg, and are wholly uninterested in stuff like the process of creation, intentionality, composition, meta-narrative, and anything else. They see art as just pretty picture, so when they generate a pretty picture with AI, they conclude that they're artists.
I'm honestly not against AI as a technology, once the hype dies down (and the bubble pops), we'll have some pretty neat tools.
The problem with AI right now is that it is literally based on art theft. The training is done on art recklessly scraped from all over the web.
One way to solve it would be to just pay artists. Make a platform where artists could submit their OC, get paid for a license, and maybe get some residual whenever the model they've trained gets used. Is it way harder and expensive than just scrapping whataver from google images? Yes. But it would be right thing to do.
