On the subject of Luddites: they were right. The industrial looms that were introduced in Britain and that they were resisting destroyed one of the most important forms of skilled labor (weaving) in Britain and replaced it with child labor that frequently left children's fingers (or hands or worse) mutilated. I think we can agree today that exploitative child labor is wrong, and the Luddites were right to oppose it. They weren't opposed to machines - they were opposed to machines destroying entire forms of work and the basic way of life of a huge number of people. And yes, they lost - because the British army was sent to the north of England in the largest military occupation in British history to that point. (For a more thorough analysis of this, see Brian Merchant's "The Blood in the Machine," which also draws the comparison to AI resistance today.)
