Firstly, broadening your horizons by studying overseas isn't spying, neither does it prove that the student's home country's education is inferior. Secondly, while I respect the American's belief, I wish to point out two key things. I have seen this man before, and he claims himself to be Christian. I believe one thing steadfastly: you cannot have true democracy and true religious Christianity together. Because while Christianity does have freedom and does value individuals, to apply all of its values to millions who do not believe it would be a contradiction to "democracy". There are things you cannot in good conscience agree with in democracy that perfectly align with this faith. A note here is that I fully understand the concepts of Christianity because I was raised a Christian, and I believe there is a God. This is my belief. What will this man's democracy be based on? It is not a bad thing to have the Christian faith's principles as a guideline for the community. But is that then democracy? No. In democracy, idealistically, the majority rules and decides. Should the majority be idiots and vote for impractical laws, by democracy's laws, those people have the final say. And remember that Christianity is not a democracy. There is a King. And common sense should tell this man that his ideals will never work in this world, especially not America, unfortunately. Also, as for politics, aside from his ill-explained stance on Taiwan (I do not believe taking it by force would be right, but then, I have never seen fair politics, especially not in America), the student's view of using education as a stepping stool and a way to become a useful, productive member of his society is not wrong. It doesn't mean you are a robot. In a way, we are all small parts of a bigger picture. Yes, individuals are very important, but what is a strong society built on? Members who work in union with each other. In a democracy, everyone has different opinions. Humans are argumentative and stubborn and selfish by nature, which is why we need to learn and why we have laws and society to keep us in check. Especially with a population of 1.4 billion, you need a strong government and collective goals for the nation so that it does not weaken due to internal strife. If China had been a democracy right after WWI, I do not believe it would be where it is today. The circumstances would not have allowed it. Was everything that happened good and absolutely necessary? I also think not. But today, at least China is doing pretty well for itself considering the abject poverty it was in roughly half a century ago. And I do believe the common Chinese citizens have a better quality of life than the average Americans do. All governments have their pros and cons. But I believe all cultures are different and need their own individual methods of doing things. If democracy is what works for certain countries, then let them be democratic. If different methods work for other countries, then let them continue. Also, the principle of "collective good for the society" is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture, as much as individualism is for North American culture. Let us try to be understanding of each other instead of immediately attacking each others' beliefs. I cannot assure you that the average Chinese does not go about their day thinking they are oppressed, because quite frankly they are not. Does their government exert a good deal of control? Yes. They do. Do they make mistakes? Yes, of course. But then, what form of government hasn't? Perhaps that is the system that works for Chinese people. There are many different forms of government, from monarchies, to socialist states, to democracies, etc... I do not believe that democracy is the only correct form of government.
I just realised how long this comment is. Sorry for taking whoever gets this far's time. I hope you have a good day.
