I would boil the video down to one main concern, which seems to be the following: The training data is basically copied when an image is generated, and artists are not consenting their work to be used as training data. This violates the artists rights.
I wonder where Sam would limit this view. Are Universities as an example violating artists rights when they use the artist’s work for teaching purposes? I guess my question is, why could the same criticisms not be levied in a similar way against classical art programs, as they are often using copyrighted imagery to make money teaching a certain style, concept, or technique? As even decent artists regularly use their training to produce replicas of existing work 😉.
Regarding the direct copying of art by the ai: I thought that neural networks are kind of like brains. You teach/train them on a lot of data, until they can do a task without needing the original training data anymore. In that case I would ask, how the ai is different from an exceptional artist, that has been formally trained in a university program?
