Without human input, AI lacks purpose and direction, making it no different from traditional tools like paintbrushes or cameras, which also produce nothing on their own. Basically, if a person that uses AI to make art isn't considered an "artist" then the same must hold true for every other "artistic" profession that uses tools. If an AI that makes art exists, without someone to prompt it or guide it, it literally makes nothing at all, it lacks purpose entirely, in the exact same way that a pencil and paper are useless if nobody is around to utilize them. If he took a seed image, something he drew that likely wasn't very good, and ran it through AI to achieve that he envisioned in his mind, then he is as much an artist as any that has ever wielded a paintbrush, crayon, or pencil.
