“Automation in theory should have been an asset. Organised properly, we should all have a better standard of living and work only half the number of hours we did before. What’s the actual result? 20% of the population have no job at all and most of them have little prospect of ever finding one. The ones that are lucky enough to have employment get ulcers and have heart attacks or mental breakdowns because they have to work twice as hard trying to keep up with the technology which enables them to produce the extra goods that few can now afford to buy. They have less leisure time to enjoy their hard-earned money, and when they try to spend it, they have a guilty conscience because so many people are either starving, or without employment or even hope for the future.”
