Why would you think that AI cannot explore the physical world? Look at the exponential progress that China has made with humanoid robotics. These are also controlled by AI. In less than 5 years, you will see these robots everywhere, walking around, doing tasks for their owners, but possibly also just looking around, wondering, thinking, hoping, plotting.
