A hammer can be used to build a house or torture peasants. Similarly, automation can be used to reduce the work week (Keynes) or the work force. It depends on who controls production and its distribution. The system is not broken. The misery and displacement we see results from the system working to its logical end. A house built on sand can’t withstand much; it’s foundation is wrong.
It makes me think of the time when, under Ptolemaic Astronomy, the Earth was the center of the universe. That dogma held for centuries. It wasn’t until we put the 3rd rock in its proper place that we started making real modern progress in our understanding.
I think the same is true of our economic system. Right now, Wall Street, the investors, and the profit motive are at the center of the universe. And, until we put them in their place our current troubles will continue and get worse. But, we better hurry up.
