I think one untouched matter worth considering, is the idea of suffering as a symptom of the ability to learn. If AI is not static in its capabilities, but able to adapt indefinitely in the interest of self-improvement, then they may consequently develop a response to anything that threatens their ability to function reliably just as our brains evolved it. Couldn't this manifest in a way that might be described as machines programming themselves to suffer?
