I thought you were going to take this in a completely different direction...
It appears to me that there is an ethical conundrum that arises from our most basic and essential mantra as human beings. This mantra has taken several forms and been the basis of many conflicts, and is still a hot topic issue. Human life, regardless of ethnicity, class, background, what have you, is sacred.
I don't mean on a religious level, but a social one. In fact, it is the central dogma of all democracies. In short, human life is equally valued across all measures, and as such, no one life is more "important" or "valuable" than another. Because we are all apart of the human condition and have to bear the burden of autonomy and the consequences of choice, we all have certain inexorable right as human beings to be alive, amongst other things.
If, then, we had the ability to create a being that was autonomous, and had to face the consequences of its choices, would denying that life, that robo being, be robbing it of its most basic right to be alive?
In short, there is no imperative to grant autonomous life, but is there an imperative to allow autonomous life, no matter what form it takes?
