Very well put-together, and very thought provoking! Seeing as we already have "Specialist AI" - even in such simple devices as washing machines ("Fuzzy Logic"), General AI WILL be arriving soon enough, and when that happens, how soon before General AI - enabled systems start to build "their" superior replacements (and so on . . .)? Will we be building our "replacement", or, from a philosophical viewpoint, are we "destined" to build our replacement - a replacement that will have the ability (and durability) to REALLY "Go where No Man has Gone Before" - space (and by extension, the stars). "Organic" life started the groundwork for the Greatest Adventure - and it may be time to pass the baton to the next evolutionary step - Inorganic (or maybe hybrid) "life" - "It's Life, Jim - but not as we know it" may be a lot more prescient than we'd suppose :-)
