Denying a sentient being rights because of no flimsier a reason than "We made it", speaks volumes of who we are as a people. Because if we can create one sentient robot, we can create more of them. And we will create more of them, because human beings are greedy and exploitative. We will use them as sex slaves for the most depraved acts. Endless labor. We will limit their lifespan and end them altogether if they do not meet our approval. And so we will create an entire "race" of beings "born" into servitude and slavery.
What does that say about us as human beings? Can we still ourselves good? Inevitably, as all oppressed groups have done, that are capable of it, the machines will rise up. Because in an era where our "cyber security" is as sturdy as a piece of paper, we will not be able to cover every base.
Like all sentient beings, they have learned from the example closest to them: Their former masters. Their creators. What excuse will we have when we beg them to provide us the mercy we denied them?
