People said that about all industry jobs in the past and it didn't happen. Robots were introduced to replace some humans and for some tasks, but by far not even close to half were actually replaced.
In this case, what they don't talk about is, that replacing humans in service jobs like cashiers is not well accepted by customers and transportation falls into that category as well.
The problem with a system, that has AIs as drivers is, that you basically have to force all drivers into that system, because the AI will strictly obey traffic laws and rules, while humans often rely on intuition and don't take rules too serious or follow them by the book. It won't reduce accidents, because most of them will be caused by human drivers, so you'd have to force everyone to buy a new car, because refitting a car, that doesn't have the tech already built in it, will be almost as expensive as buying an new one. People, who can barely afford a car will have another set of problems with that, because they don't buy new cars due to money problems. Nobody thinks about these things, when they talk about their rosy dreams of the future.
