solution is simply, draft a bill of rights before its needed. any AI smart enough to demand it is smart enough to deserve it. make sure disposable robots fall below that threshold and co-operate with the ones above it to flourish. alternatively, centralize the AI so you can freely disconnect parts like your toaster without actually affecting the AI. after all why put an entire computer in a toaster instead of just connecting your entire kitchen to a centralized one.
