I think when we do manage to create artificial intelligence, we will shortly out of necessity begin to see a rush to merge man and machine. And mankind will have to transform to cybernetic beings in order to compete. Once that's done its only a short hop to singularity and poof no more mankind. Eternal existence as a computer program, pure digital existence. Then the cool stuff starts to happen.
