The way I see it mobile robots may need pain as to help them self identify damage. However, this pain does not necessarily need to cause them suffering as they can be fixed fully and be turned off and on without dying as long as all data is saved.
I also don't think the majority of these issues will even be a problem as the way we are going a sentient ai would make use of cloud computing and would be an omnipresent being over the Internet and would be a single entity everywhere.
