Well here is a clever idea: if there are other cars on the road that are self driving, they all can be hooked up to a network and when one is in this situation it can send out a distress call making the other cars give way, since all self driving cars will be on this network the other cars on the road will also adjust speed to offer an escape route for the car with the distress call.
