Social media companies want to avoid liability, pushing the liability to the platform / OS holders such as Microsoft, is something they wanted. Those that were okay with collecting individuals private data wanted to do so because they could sell it, or use it to train their AI models which would help them make more money. The government wants as much data and surveillance as possible. Having platform holders or social media companies verify age, collect ID, it enhances the surveillance power of the state. So they're all for it. It's just a perfect storm of terrible actors all with different goals but through the same means.
