I'm also in tech, and I don't think that's a joke either. I'm only sticking around because I'm 45 and I think I have enough institutional knowledge to ride this out til retirement. Plus I'm not in good enough shape anymore to do physical labor.
Big companies have basically stopped hiring new people without experience. At the rate AI is going, assuming no societal collapse or anything, AI will easily be able to do whatever a new hire straight from college in 2030 can do, regardless of what they train for. While likely there will still be a need for experts who can guide the AI and fix it when it breaks, very very few companies will be hiring people straight from college to devote years long training so they can do that. Most of Gen X will still be working in 2030. It'll only be once Gen X is retired and millennials have started leave the workforce that companies will start to freak out that they still need senior techs that they will start to worry about training younger generations. But, that will be way to late for 2030s grads.
Of course, no one knows. Maybe data centers will suck up all the water and we'll all die. Maybe AI will actually never do anything right, and it'll be scraped in a year as a fad. I don't know. But right now, looking at everything, if I was starting over from scratch, I'd look into being a plumber.
