I've been saying this for years. Those who think we can hide behind 4k or any watermarking haven't been paying close attention to how fast this is evolving. The only thing that is going to matter in the future is chain of custody. We know from past cases that you can't reliably even trust eyewitness testimony. We used to be able to depend on security camera footage (which is almost never 4k), but today that's being challenged and pushed by technology almost to a point where it will be challenged against being ai generated in every case going forward. It's going to quickly become a cat and mouse game of using tools to try to detect if it was ai generated followed by ai updating to make that impossible and so on. It's an avenue we will not win in the end. What will potentially win? Chain of custody where the video evidence came directly out of the machine and everyone who touched it and everyone who had access to it will be scrutinized. This doesn't resolve the situation, but it's going to make it difficult to admit evidence taken by a third party.
