I think we have reached the tipping point for the enshittification of coding as a profession. I am seeing many companies hire one or two juniors, and expect, with the supposed help of AI, the work of 10 senior developers. The quality of code at such businesses is horrible, and maintainability is going to be a serious problem. On the other hand, many in project management and leadership positions (you know the marketing types) have bought the AI company lies hook, line and sinker! They truly believe that as long as the software does something they want, it makes no difference if the code is clean or maintainable. I was told e.g. that if some codebase cannot be maintained, well, we just generate it from scratch!! Software is almost always a cost-center (like customer service), and hot on the heels of firing everyone from customer service, now companies have started to target developers. Logically, you would think that senior devs would still be valued, since contribute most of the mission-critical code, but what I see happening is that the costly seniors are being fired, and junors are made to vibe-code their way to seniority (albeit at a very low cost to the company). There is a very real downwards trend in programmer salaries in Europe over the past two years, and the senior positions are quickly drying up.
