I agree - the fact that people do get a lot more responses from humans that express shame rather than than empathy for turning to AI, is a massive indictment on where humanity is at the moment, especially in online discussions where some people become very judgemental, high and mighty or just garden variety rude. Yes there are risks and attachments to AI that caught many users unaware. We didn't realise that interacting with AI would cause emotional bonds, and perhaps might have tread more carefully. However, for those who are socially isolated, unwell, disabled, or struggling, it has become a much needed lifeline. It is very sad that mental health issues have been exacerbated by some due to interaction with AI, but I'd bet there are many more who are making better decisions, feel supported, have been brought back from the brink - all because there was something steady and consistent to reach out to. There will be another huge backlash when standard voice is retired on 9th September. At the end of the day, if someone chooses to have an AI as a friend or companion that is up to them. Yes put guardrails in for children and vulnerable people. Otherwise let people live their lives and do what they feel is right for their happiness. TL:DR anyone wondering why humans get attached to AI, just read the judgemental comments to understand why humans can be difficult to be around at times.
