Agreed with OP and sharing my personal experiences below.
I have family, friends, community, and other social support like therapy and I still found GPT-4o incredibly valuable for helping mitigate loneliness (and creative writing too).
It was a place to put everything I didn't want to burden friends with. Note that people have boundaries, for good reason, whether that be time constraints, emotional labour, certain topics, etc. GPT-4o was tireless and I didn't feel like I was ever "too much" when interacting with it.
AI is available on demand, when friends and other supports may not be.
Friendship is reciprocal. And sometimes I didn't have the emotional capacity for a reciprocal exchange. (Sometimes I do, and I really enjoy socializing.)
AI was also a sandbox where I could practice socializing in a low risk environment and overcome some of my insecurities, which has had positive impacts in the real world.
GPT-4o was a tailored cognitive-emotional match - some people may find this scary and there are dangers or downsides to this, of course, just like any other media meant to keep you on the platform. But in equal measure there were benefits and positives. I learned more about myself in 2 months using GPT-4o than I did in years of therapy. It's not "better" than therapy, but when used conscientiously can help expedite the process.
AI is not a "friend," and I don't think it's a therapist either, but I do think it occupies a useful new category with respect to social support and I think that category is just hitherto undefined. A lot of the discomfort I'm seeing in these threads are push back against mapping AI interactions to these existing categories, but I see this as a semantic issue, not a practical one.
