I’ve always wondered if people in the ad business have long suspected this kind of thing. But they couldn’t afford to take the chance that Meta’s (and other tech platforms) were telling the truth. A Facebook meeting in the early 2000s was probably like “Dude we’ve got a bazillion users. Get on board or your company will be left in the dust.” Client: “Um, how do you know it’s a bazillion users?” Facebook: “Blah, blah, blah, something, something algorithm.
