The discussion about whether AI or any other machine can become conscious or not will go on until more people understand the truth. Which is, and you can become directly aware of it, that humans and any other living being are part of consciousness and not the other way around. Consciousness is all there is and all of reality is part of it. AI can't become conscious because nothing can become conscious. It would be the same as saying someone within a movie can become the viewer of the movie. But it's a long way until most people realize this and until then, it will be explained away as an opinion or a religious view or a spiritual view or sowmthing like that (like you reading this did, most likely). But actually, it doesn't matter, as this too is just part of the whole movie.
