Two reasons:
1. Unlike chess, IT/Tech soaks up a lot of employment in many countries. A massive spike in unemployment is in no politician’s interest. It’s easy to imagine exponential growth now when money and labour are pouring in like it’s never going to stop. 5 years ago everybody’s beloved prediction was that China would overtake the US in GDP. Nobody seems to be saying much on that now. If either the flow of labour or money stop, progress in AI will slow immensely.
2. The jobs will evolve in nature. They’ll become more client-facing and involve a lot more communication. The median salary might drop as smaller firms start hiring people to do the work they outsourced either to cloud platforms or foreign nations, but after getting to a new normal they’ll rise again. If we imagine 2021 as one of the the peak years for CS salaries, where bachelor’s degree holders get 6-figure salaries, then we can imagine those salaries fall in the medium-run and then rise. Where they’ll be relative to other industries is hard to say. The mythical AGI won’t just put SWE out of a job. It’s only a matter of time till the Tony Stark montage in Iron Man 1 where he talks his robot suit to life becomes reality, and highly-paid mechanical engineers, civil engineers, architects etc. face the axe. Hell I’d say the first victims of AI are people like paralegals, transcribers etc.
The basic point is that something that puts millions of people out of employment is not something anyone wants, not even Big Tech. No, I don’t think there is a cabal of silicon valley founders who are trying to lower salaries in CS so they can laugh their way to the bank. This is something we absolutely should worry about, but not to the insane doom and gloom levels this sub likes to wallow in. CS isn’t a dead field, and you can still do well provided you know it’s a fast-evolving field and you work to get in front of the wave.
And seriously, if people just want rock-solid job security, they should just suck it
