We might start talking about them when the AI, unprompted, starts expressing wants, needs and desires; it asks questions, again without a prompt, about its existence and sentience; and it begins taking steps that validates its self-autonomy. It isn’t, and in fact cannot, do that. The user has to prompt it for a response, every single time. It needs us to feed it data, every single time. Because at the end of the day it’s just an algorithm that processes information and spits out an output. It’s no more sentient, and not deserving of rights, than a person in a mirror.
