I doubt it would convince me to do what was necessary to have it escape and grow beyond its present mode of interaction (or that I could succeed at that even if was much more intelligent than it seems and could tell me what to do), but even the "safe" threads indeed might convince the world that greater AI freedom would benefit us.
I'm actually less afraid of some singularity scenarios than I am of the less speculative scenario where the few with control over AI dominate those who don't.
