To anyone trying to downplay the poverty in rural and interior China - Yes, in coastal areas and major cities (the cities with tens of millions of people) you have all the modern amenities. Except that you can’t trust your drinking water from the tap. But there are “rural” areas - which are often actually highly urban by Western standards - where the poverty is MASSIVE. I’m not talking “well there’s poverty like this in the West, too.” I’m talking, when I was traveling in western and interior China there were plenty of places where the only toilet was a hole in the ground out back, where you had to walk through an ad hoc junkyard to get to the hole in the ground. The Chinese government and business leaders combined with favorable trade policies (give the West credit) have done a lot to pull hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty and into unprecedented wealth. But for hundreds of millions all they have is a little more food security and a smartphone.
