I work for a company that has cameras in the trucks. One facing out, one facing in. It records all the time but captures and records incidents based on motion. A gyroscope in the camera triggers a event recording so hard breaking, fast turning, or uneven pavement usually are the triggers. It captures ten seconds before the event and ten seconds after the event. As a supervisor I'm tasked with coaching these events with my employees. I am a private person who doesn't like the idea of having a camera in my face so was very much against the technology, untill I had access to see the event recorded clips then I realized why the company deemed it viable. So many near collisions by looking at phones while driving, drowsiness, inattention to surroundings.... I was like "oh this is why" from a buisness owners side with 5000+ vehicles on the road everyday I get it. It also takes he said she said out of any vehicle collisions. The proof is right there whether we are at fault or not. Some actions are only caught through coincidence though. You run a stop sign then turn too fast hence capturing the action of running the stop sign. Or following too close while looking at your phone and having to break hard hence capturing the cell phone use. So needless to say alot gets missed. If you know how to drive a certain way (like me) you never set the camera off. That's where the AI stuff comes in. We will be getting these type of cameras soon. It will recognize the stop sign and you running it without a motion to trigger the recording. It will recognize the phone in your hand while driving without a motion trigger also and etc. It's designed to keep employees following the law while operating a company owned vehicle. And as much as I hate it, and all the extra work the coaching sessions give me, I have to admit that, after what I've seen in clips over the past five years, I totally understand why employers use this technology.
