One of the areas we’re seeing this “Automation 3.0”, as described in the article, is with call center jobs. While these have never been considered high paying jobs (or even well respected), depending on the company they can actually pay pretty well. Hiring people with minimal education (no college degree required) and offering on the job training with some level of upward mobility into middle management. In recent years there has been a drive to direct the customer to “self service” online, using the company’s app or website to pay bills or find answers to common questions. Now there is a drive towards chat based customer service. Currently you’re still getting a real person for most of your chat based customer service but while they have real people chatting with you, those chats are being fed into an AI. For now the chat bot may only activate for the introductory portion of your chat and then it passes you off to a real person, but as the AI learns more and more it can take over more of the chat and that chat volume will be directed to the chat bot. All of this reduces the incoming call/chat volume that would require a real person which equates into smaller hiring targets. Within the next 10 years these jobs will mostly be AI, that also means you won’t need all the layers of middle management to oversee the entry level workers. This makes up thousands of jobs around the world, jobs offering paid leave, medical benefits, 401k options etc that will no longer be. Where will these otherwise low skilled workers go to receive similar pay and benefits?
