People should read a book called “Weapons of Math Destruction”. The author is a data scientist who shows how our society in many areas has moved towards using algorithms to decide the fates of people, without having proper feedback loops to check whether the algorithm is being used correctly or even getting the correct results. She shows algorithms being used in employment, recidivism, policing, loans, schooling, so many aspects. It’s a very fascinating read.
