This is the problem with people having only some literacy in science, thinking that because they barely understand the basics, that they have the comprehension to explain more advanced concepts.
Science literacy should mostly be used to quench one's curiosity as well as allow one to sniff out obvious bullshit, not as a way to dismiss or interpret early studies by specialists in their field.
