Herd immunity should not be discussed outside the context of a vaccine. If an effective vaccine becomes available, it is by far the better option to protect the population from a future epidemic. You can’t rely on immunity from a past epidemic alone when there is evidence of reinfection, the virus may be able to mutate (which is plausible, looking at other coronaviruses), and kids and immunocompromised people are still at risk.
