You know, I always wonder why China goes out of it's way to always pick the authoritarian solution with worst PR. I mean, if I wanted to censor news and opinions I would just create super-popular news platform with *personalized feed* so people can browse their favorite cat news and articles written by others that think like them. Then when shit happens I can just lower the priority of such news in all feeds. You know - cat facts, memes and your hobbies on the front page, anti-government articles of the fifth. Make it automatic so non-dangerous things can go viral (like good jokes, memes, comedians...) and push problematic articles even further down... It's not technically a censorship, just showing people what we think interests them the most.
