Have you seen how the Trump administration is treating poor people crossing over the border? If anything it just gives politicians an excuse to impose more draconian measures. People will justify it to themselves that the poor people deserve it in some fashion, just so they don't have to sacrifice an ounce of comfort until they have to. It happens time, and time, and time again...
